Chapter 22

I rolled my eyes. “Whatever. Let’s just get out of here. I don’t like it in hospitals and I want to get my clean clothes. Got it?”

“Yes, ma’am,” he said with a laugh. He knew he’d won and it ticked me off, too.

We went to his car, which I assumed he got while I was sleeping, and drove to the safe house. Police cars were everywhere, with even more officers ducking under the yellow crime scene tape.

“Stay here and I’ll get our luggage,” he said.

“No.” I got out of the car. “I’m not being treated like a weakling and I want to get changed from the idiot-blood clothes.”

“But you’re not a weakling,” he said. “It’ll take me ten minutes and you can change later.”

“If I help, it’ll only take five minutes. Time is of the essence, Peter, and you know it.”

“Fine.” He wasn’t happy but that was too bad. I had to get changed. Rick’s blood on my clothes wasn’t a good look for me.

After we went up the stairs, I showered and threw on different clothes. Once I packed my things, I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the door.

Peter took it from my hand with a grin. “Mine.”

I pointed. “No, that’s your suitcase there.”

“No, mine to carry. This isn’t negotiable.”

This macho junk was just irritating. “Go for it.” I wasn’t about to fight over a suitcase when we’d waste more time.

“So, what’s your plan?” he asked, as soon as we got to the car.

“I need my laptop, a phone, and a safe place to work,” I said. “Then we’ll see what happens.”

He tried to help me into the car, but I gave him a dirty look. “I’m fine. Wait seven months then I’ll think about your help.”

He chuckled. “Right. Got it.”

You’re right you got it, buddy. I loved being in charge.

We drove away and I told him to go to my old business, the Liberty Hotel on the west side of De Pere. We grabbed a quick bite at a fast food restaurant and talked about the case the rest of the way to the hotel. As we entered the lobby, I saw my old friend Jerry who was still working in the same spot where I’d left him almost a year earlier.

“Natalie?” He ran from his post and gave me a big hug. “I’ve missed you so much.”

I glanced at Peter’s raised eyebrows and backed away from Jerry. “Jerry, I’m married now, and we’re expecting a child in June.”

His mouth fell open as he looked at my stomach. “Gosh, you don’t waste any time, do you?”

I smiled toward Peter. “Nope. Now, we need a room, because we’re hiding out again.”

“Again? We can put you near the front desk, if you want.”

“The murder room, if possible,” I said. When I’d worked with Jerry, a woman was murdered right behind the front desk, which was how I’d met Peter.

“Are you sure?” he whispered.

“Yep. Is it taken?”

“Actually it is,” he whispered again. “How about the room across from the front desk?”

“Perfect.
